Pediatric Specialist Explains How Biological Aging Foundations Begin During Early Childhood

Pediatric specialist Dr. Nil Sarıçiçek emphasized that human aging begins long before old age, stating that early childhood experiences significantly determine long-term biological health. Sarıçiçek called for a broader view of pediatric care to prioritize early environmental and emotional well-being to prevent future health vulnerabilities.

According to Dr. Sarıçiçek, aging is not merely composed of the physical changes that emerge in advanced years, but is an ongoing biological trajectory that starts as early as intrauterine development. She pointed out that past circumstances directly influence adult well-being.

“The foundations of some health problems we experience today may be related to experiences we encountered in the earliest periods of life and often did not even notice. For this reason, we should evaluate health not only through today’s symptoms, but as a lifelong process.”

The Prenatal and Childhood Origins of Cellular Aging

A 2023 scientific paper titled “Early Origins of Health and Disease Risk: The Need to Investigate Adverse Exposures and Biological Aging Across the Prenatal, Childhood, and Adolescent Periods” underlined the need to examine the link between adverse life conditions and biological aging from pregnancy through adolescence. Referring to this scientific framework, Dr. Sarıçiçek highlighted telomeres as critical biological markers.

Telomeres protect chromosome ends and naturally shorten as cells divide, serving as indicators of cellular aging rates. Dr. Sarıçiçek noted that severe prenatal anxiety, depression, economic hardship, poor nutrition, exposure to violence, domestic conflict, chronic childhood stress, and neglect can all contribute to accelerated telomere shortening.

“These findings remind us that child health is not just about physical growth and development. The environment a child grows up in, the stress they experience, and how safe they feel are of lifelong importance for health.”

Disparity Between Chronological and Biological Age

Dr. Sarıçiçek also drew attention to epigenetic aging indicators, which reveal information about cellular biological age and the progression of senescence. Scientific evidence demonstrates measurable links between negative early exposures and these cellular markers.

“A child may be eight years old by calendar age. However, their biological processes may differ from another child of the same age. Early-life adversity may be associated with accelerated biological aging markers in some children. Of course, this does not mean that every child who experiences negative events is biologically older or will definitely fall ill in the future. What is important here is to understand the relationship between early life conditions and future health risks, and to reduce preventable risks.”

A proactive approach cannot rely on a single metric. Long-term developmental capacity requires adequate nutrition, restful sleep, regular exercise, metabolic health, stress mitigation skills, strong social ties, and a secure environment.

“In the past, we used to ask, ‘Is your child healthy?’ Today, we must add a new question to this: ‘What are we doing to prepare our child for a healthy future?’ Because healthy aging is not only about measures taken in older age. It is also closely related to the biological, psychological, and social conditions shaped from the earliest periods of life. Childhood is not the period before aging. It is one of the most important life stages where the biological infrastructure of healthy aging is shaped and where we can invest in future health.”
